School Location. Andrean High School, is located on the original 20 acre plot that fronts on 5959 Broadway in Merrillville, Indiana. Andrean is a Catholic high school belonging to the Diocese of Gary. In 1999 the purchase of the woods north of the school added approximately 25 acres for further expansion. The members of the Basilian Fathers and the Sisters of Saints Cyril and Methodius joined with lay staff to administer and supervise the life of Andrean when the school was opened in 1959.
School Name. Honors Andrew Grutka, the first bishop of Gary. The idea for the school name came from Fr. Higgins C.S.B. The nickname, "Fighting 59ers." was submitted by Larry Preston a member of the premier class of Andrean High School.
School Colors. Red and gold, were chosen by Fr. John Burke C.S.B. Red symbolizes the martyrdom of St. Andrew and gold his glorification. St. Andrew is the patron saint of Bishop Grutka.
School Motto. "Magister Meus Christus" The translation is "Christ is my teacher".
The school includes a library, four science laboratories, a guidance complex, a student chapel, music complex, three networked computer labs and three art rooms. Sections of the convent and priest residence were remodeled during the summer of 2000 to create five new classrooms and a band practice room. In the fall of 2001, the chapel in the priests' residence was converted into a theater with an adjacent coffee house, Cafe 59. In the fall of the 2000, a computer lab with access to the Internet was installed adjacent to the library. In the fall of 2003, a second Internet lab was added and our Internet connection was upgraded to a T-1 line.In the fall of 2004, a third lab was brought on line. In 2006, all classrooms were brought on-line. Teachers now report attendance and grades through the network. Parents and students can view student grade progress through the Internet by accessing Edline.
Athletic facilities include two gymnasiums, training room, weight room, baseball diamond, softball diamond, football stadium, track, six tennis courts and adjacent athletic practice fields. Future plans include soccer fields.
Ninety-two percent of the graduates of Andrean continue their education at two- and four-year colleges and universities. Our students are recruited by over 65 colleges and universities.

(Excerpt from the Acropolis May 1960, author unknown)

Fifty-Niner isn’t a date or street number or a miner or a freight train or an old man with a long white beard.
Rather, it represents something more splendid than we realize.
Fifty-Niners is a proper noun. It stands for a group of very courageous and sacrificing human beings, your parents and others like them, who out of their boundless generosity, have built a school where you can receive the truth of Christ from people dedicated to Christianity.
And you, and everyone who comes after you, are Fifty-Niners, too. For you embody the spirit of those who faced the odds with courage and gave you this opportunity. You can say, “Christ is my Teacher” because they were willing to carry His cross.
Now that you have received, you must give. You must give of your talent and your time in measuring up to the spirit of the Fifty-Niners, which you have received. It is for you to immortalize that spirit in all your undertakings—be they spiritual, academic, artistic, or athletic.
Wake up Fifty-Niners! Realize what you are! In 1959 a vision became a reality—a dream came true. You are that vision. You are that dream. Be real and true—Fifty-Niners!
